MANHATTAN HORSE TRAINING CENTER AND NEIGHBORHOOD POOL
This historical New York City Building is located between West 66th street and West 67th Street. The building had previously been used for horses, which is still evident today on the façade located on W 67th Street, where the iron horse tiebacks are still in place. The project calls for both public and municipal activities that include a horse arena for the NYPD Mounted Police training, Dressage viewing and a Public Pool. I felt it necessary to keep the existing facades to show the building’s history. Therefore it only made sense to allow the public to enter into the building through the West 67th Street entrance, where they can see the historical details of the facade.
To get a better contrast of old and new, I separated them by keeping all of the new programs eight feet off the existing walls. This created a void that allowed natural ventilation through the operable glass roof that is placed between the old and new structures. This provided vital fresh air to the horse stables located underground. The new structural system creates a large volume inside of the existing building, which then can be broken up into smaller individual program pieces. The pool area is placed on the roof of the horse arena which is then tied into the rest of the building by the vertical circulation. The two large programs are unified by a restaurant that floats between the horse arena and the pool.
